KYNETT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
HISTORY IN BRIEF

Kynett United Methodist Church is the first year 'round church on Long Beach Island. Sometime before 1888, a Union Sunday School was formed and met in the waiting room of the Pennsylvania Railroad Station on Third Street. As larger quarters were needed the Sunday School met in the schoolhouse on Third Street between Bay Avenue and Beach Avenue. The Church was organized on May 5, 1888 and was called Methodist Episcopal Church of Beach Haven, Ocean County, New Jersey. The first pastor, Rev. S. J. Gwynne, had to make the trip to Long Beach Island by sail boat from West Creek each Sunday.

A church was erected on the east side of Beach Avenue between Centre and Second Streets in 1890. A house across the street was used for the parsonage.

The church is named for Dr. Alpha J. Kynett, a prominent figure in the Methodist Church. In his position as executive officer of the General Conference, a permanent loan fund of over $6,000,000 was raised and over 11,000 churches were assisted.

A Friends Meeting House had stood since 1882 on a lot at the northeast comer of Second Street and Beach Avenue. In 1908 the building was moved to a lot next to the church and used as a library. When a new library was built [in town], the building was deeded to the Kynett Church. It now serves as our Parish House.

The original church was destroyed by fire on Palm Sunday 1932. For the rest of 1932 services were held in the Beach Haven Fire House. On August 15, 1932, the comer stone of the new church was laid.

As years went by the need for additional space for the Sunday School became urgent. An addition connecting the church with the Parish house was completed in 1957. At that time the location of the chancel was changed to the south end of the church and the position of the pews was reversed.
NOW THE DETAILS
TRAGEDY STRIKES

On March 20th, Palm Sunday,1932, Dr. Willis, who lived where our present parking lot is located, saw that the church was on fire. At almost the same moment, Chris Sprague, the Police Chief, discovered the fire. They turned in the alarm and ran to the church.

Upon entering the building they were greeted by rolling masses of smoke, and soon the interior was a mass of flames. The entire Beach Haven Fire Department responded, but when it was discovered that a strong westerly 20-mile an hour wind was scattering sparks broadly, the Beach Arlington Fire Company was called. (Beach Arlington is now Ship Bottom.)

The fire raged from 12:15 to 4:30 a.m. and Carrol Stratton and his crew were commended for preventing the flames from spreading to the house east of the church.

The only things saved from the church were church records, a Holy Bible and one pew.

THE TOWER TALE

The origina1890 church had a tower, a steeple and a bell. The church's tall steeple was a prominent landmark and served as a guide for boaters out in the bay. The steeple, badly damaged by a heavy windstorm in 1903, was removed in 1906.

A bell tower was included in the new church designed by architect George Savage and built by contractor Floyd L. Cranmer.

The bell, cast in 1895 when J. F. Cordova was Pastor (1894-1897) was removed from the tower in 1988 and now serves as a memorial to long time faithful servant James Stack.
