UMCOR's work warms hearts. Through our work United Methodists help to rebuild shattered lives, strengthen self-sufficiency, and encourage partnerships.

Emergency Response

In best practice, domestic and international disaster relief employs the case management model of significant participation by disaster survivors in their own recovery. In all phases of response-from the early weeks of the emergency to the long-term rehabilitation of the community-UMCOR most values the outcomes of partnerships with and self-sufficiency of survivors. Training in disaster response is a specialty of UMCOR.

Health

UMCOR underwrites innovative ministries in health care in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Examples include community-based primary health care, HIV/AIDS programs, mission hospital revitalization, deaf and disability related ministries, health education scholarships, and community health care grants.

Refugees and Immigration

UMCOR offers the balm of hospitality in its refugee and immigration programs. The resettlement program supports refugees both within and outside the US. Justice for Our Neighbors, working from United Methodist churches with large immigrant populations, provides free legal counsel for immigrants and asylum seekers.

World Hunger and Poverty

UMCOR seeks to alleviate poverty and hunger through sustainable development, training in innovative agriculture techniques, and partnerships with ecumenical groups. Technologies such as soy and moringa production, beekeeping, and integrated pest management, once unknown, are now in use by hundreds of farmers in developing countries.

Relief Supplies

Material resources can save lives in the days and weeks immediately following a catastrophe. UMCOR Sager Brown in Baldwin, Louisiana, encompasses a mission facility for volunteers and the UMCOR Depot, a warehouse that serves as a staging area for donated emergency supplies.

UMCOR Field Offices

UMCOR successfully revitalizes communities throughout the world. In 13 offices in Europe, Asia, and Africa we treat the community as a whole and not as a collection of individuals. We encourage the community to regard UMCOR assistance as an opportunity and not as charity. We work with communities to render assistance in a timely fashion. Housing, livelihoods, clean water, education, security, community projects to foster harmony-UMCOR integrates all these solutions to revitalize a community and stimulate self-sufficiency.

Methodist Churches of Long Beach Island, NJ

Here are a few of the many outreach  and mission projects supported by the United Methodist Churches on Long Beach Island as well as by the Conference Church.

Red Bird is one of four mission institutions of the United Methodist Red Bird Missionary Conference. Red Bird Mission School in Beverly, Ky., has been in existence since 1921.

The LBI Methodist Churches provide support to local food pantries, housing projects, and counseling needs. Food supplies, money, and clothing are sent regularly to Manahawkin Food Pantry, Camden Community Center, Atlantic City Rescue Mission, Providence House in Toms River, and others. Read Derrick's story.

UMCOR  (United Methodist Committee on Relief) provides 100% of money donated to the particular cause. When disaster strikes, the local church usually provides the first response. This basic understanding - that disaster response is local - helps form a foundation for UMCOR's national training and response. First and foremost, UMCOR is a resource for the local response. #

The UMW of LBI and the Terrace Church give money to help support the work done by this missionary couple, who work at the school.  The mission of Red Bird Mission School is to provide a quality education in a Christian environment for all students from preschool through twelfth grade. by educating the whole person to his or her highest potential: spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically, and socially, in order to prepare them for life-long learning.

Atlantic City Rescue Mission: Mission State me Description

Mission Statement

"The Atlantic City Rescue Mission is set apart by the Spirit of God to preach the Gospel and meet the spiritual, physical, emotional and other basic needs (through the provision of shelter, clothing, food, counseling, referral and structured programs) of the poor and those who are bound and bruised by addictive lifestyles in Atlantic City and the surrounding communities." (As directed in the Bible, Luke 4:18).

Description

The Atlantic City Rescue Mission (ACRM) takes care of the physical needs of homeless people by providing food, shelter and clothing, but the purpose is always to care for the underlying causes of their difficulties. The Mission attempts to instill in its clients a sense of each individual's worth as a human being and a child of God. ACRM brings them to a point in their lives where they can be independent and self-sufficient.
